Get the Internship You Want

In the current economic climate, it's more important than ever to steal a march on the competition. The number of graduates in the UK has increased significantly in the last generation. Consequently, more than a degree alone is required to get you that dream job.

As a result, more and more young people are looking to internships and work experience to build out their CVs and provide firm examples to help in answering interview questions.

They are a great way of demonstrating an interest in your chosen field, but how do you go about getting one?

Many people view internships as the preserve of those with contacts in the industry.

Whilst knowing someone in the industry is obviously a boon, it is by no means essential.

A lot of organisations list their internship positions on job recruitment websites.

Some internships are paid, others are not. Workihng out if you can afford to support yourself while working for free is clearly an important thing to do before you start searching. A great majority of large companies have a clear and open approach to internship recruitment and goal-setting once you've got the job. However, there are some companies who view internships as the opportunity to exploit free labour in menial positions with little value to your development.

This internship advice should help you get your foot in the door.

Take the initiative upon yourself. Find out who deals with the company's junior recruitment and get in touch. If you don't ask you don't get. It is important, though, to ensure that you don't dominate their time and inconvenience them. They are likely to be busy and bombarding them with emails and phone calls could lead to some resentment.

Thoroughly researching the company you are applying to is a must. The importance of this can not be overestimated. An interview of some sort will be necessary to secure the position. One of the best job interview tips around is to look at recent projects that the company have undertaken. This information is often available on their website.

Finally, develop a thick skin. Determination is an attribute which companies look for. Rejection hurts but it's nothing personal. You will find the right role for you eventually.
