Professionally and personally, negotiation is something inevitable in the course of things. To negotiate, means to arrive at an understanding with another person, so that both of you are satisfied with the results. Do you know if you are a good, or a not-so-good negotiator? If not, why not test and find out because most of our interactions demand negotiation. When you and your significant other decide what restaurant to go to for dinner, that is negotiation. You negotiate with your co-workers about how to divide the work. You negotiate with your clients about prices and you negotiate with your boss about your paycheck. Here are the different parameters that would help you test your negotiation skills.
Can You Identify The Needs? If you are a good negotiator, you would begin with understanding the need of the opposite party. Only after you get that understanding will you proceed further. The first requirement is to find out what the other person wants. For instance, you will have to ask your teen what he/she needs if he/she is wanting to use your automobile for the night. Do they want to have dinner outside or they are looking to get away somewhere for sometime? Or maybe they just want to get away from it all, i.e. dine in another area, which would multiply your choices exponentially.
Specifying Your Needs. Do specify your needs in no ambiguous terms to the other party. You have to be one hundred percent crystalline clear about what you want at the end of the day. If you clearly advise your superior that you are really seeking promotion and not exactly a higher pay, he/she would be able to suss things out and come up with a solution. Be clear and specific and your boss will know what to do.
The Compromise. This is the result both of you are seeking. This just might be the easiest part of the process if both parties are able to temper their needs, and subsequently their expectations. Flexibility may or may not be important - you have to ask yourself and each other, is negotiation really worth it? If both of you do not want the relationship between both parties to deteriorate, it would be imperative to exercise some flexibility. Otherwise, one of you will walk away. Negotiation is not to be misconstrued with sacrificing your own happiness for the other party and for the sake of an acceptable result - you have to think of yourself as well. It would be best if you have a good read on people you are negotiating with, and of course, you would need stellar communication skills and a quick wit. This should be all the information you need to give it a go and answer the question - are you a good negotiator?
